Brief:
Assignment 2_ a reflection on a critically situated outstanding landscape work framed by a selection of theoretical argumentation within landscape architecture theories_workin progress Presentations
The aim of this project is to generate criticism for a relevant LA work. By learning to read these projects, by approaching ‘the real and the particular” through the frame of selected theories, we will get in depth with how designsgrapple with inherited dichotomies, especially between design ideologies, representations, process and implementation;we will engage with the ways in which landscape architecture shapes theoretical thought, social reception, by reproducing or resistingsocial inequality. Bylooking at concrete excellent works we alsoaim to discuss the limitations of theoryas a practice to envision better futures. Each group of students [the same as assignment 1 or in a different member combination] will choose one of the course’s topics and will prepare a public presentation on the associated readings for the topicafter discussion with the instructorcombined with the presentation of one or two excellent landscape works from the list provided. The goal of assignment 2 is to simultaneously have students look at different reading materials, explore intellectual affinities between them, speculate on contrasting ideas, and, finally provide their own editon the topic by dissecting a landscape work that inspires them.Students can either start from an interest on a topic, and then proceed in choosing a built work, which best fits to develop a design criticism using the topic as the necessary framework for this. It will be studied through the theoretical argumentsoffered by the provided list of literature related to the topic. Or, they can select first a design work that you are interested in and find the appropriate theoretical framings through a choice of topic and related literature. The process is similar of writing a research paper, and the final outcome will be a draft version of it.The aim of the assignment is tocover all topicsas a class and we will dedicate one class day in the presentation of the suggested themes and the selected literature around them. Students will cover their focusedtopic by presenting as a group 2-3books [selected articles from it]and 4-6related articles [each of their choice] creating a meaningful narrative prioritizing an aspect of the topic[or more]. This means that each student will read and critically integrate into the group presentation at least1 book [selected chapters]and 2-3articles. The list provided is an open –ended eclectic bibliographysuggested by the instructor as a personal ongoing project. Students are highly encouraged to enrich the existing bibliography with new acquisitions especially, when tracing their theoretical argumentfor a betterdissection of a design work.
