Question:
Brian is the owner of his newly opened “Brian’s Car Wash”, where
car washes cost $25. While he was at Home Depot which is located 20 miles from
his car wash, he saw his friend JoAnn. While talking with her, Brian said “Come
to my newly opened car wash and I will give you a free car wash tomorrow.”.
JoAnn replied, “Thank you. I also have 4 tickets to the Yankees game against
Toronto for tomorrow. If you want them, they are yours.”. JoAnn told her son
Adam that he could go to a new car wash and receive a free car wash tomorrow.
A few minutes later, Brian ran into police officer Tom, who
worked in Brian’s neighborhood. Brian said, “Officer Tom if you drive by my
house soon and check up on it and make sure everything is OK, I will give you a
free car wash tomorrow.”. Officer Tom who was about to start his shift replies,
“I accept your offer.” Officer Tom then left Home Depot and began his routine
patrol, which as always, took him by Brian’s house. When he was on patrol, he
noticed there was a broken window in front of the house. He immediately called
Brian to inform him of the damage. Brian thanked him and continued to check
out.
When Brian finished buying his tools at Home Depot and came home
to investigate the window, he saw his next-door neighbor Carly. Carly said she
heard broken glass and saw a tree branch leaning into his house. Brian said,
“Carly, I will give you a free car wash tomorrow at my car wash since you
solved the mystery of my broken window.”. Carly replied, “Thank you very much.
I will see you tomorrow.”.
When Brian arrived at his new car wash the next day, he found a
long line of cars at his car wash. He texted JoAnn and Officer Tom and typed, I
will not give you a free car wash. He then noticed Carly, who had left work
early and drove the one-half hour to get to the car wash and was waiting in
line. Brian immediately said to Carly, “I am sorry, but I will not give you a
free car wash.”.
Unbeknownst to Adam about the text to his mom, he showed up at
Brian’s car wash with his extremely muddy SUV, which he used to go through the
muddy fields around his house. Brian saw Adam and Adam said my mom told me to
come and have my car washed here. Brian said that will be $32.75 because it is
an SUV and it is extremely muddy. Brian said I can not give you a free car
wash. Adam had the Yankees tickets and he went to the game with his friends.
