Nutrition Unit Plan 100 Points Possible
Teaching the basics of Nutrition through developmentally appropriate activities is a fun and challenging task for those working with you children. This is a significant assignment that will take you a considerable number of hours to complete, if done correctly as assigned. Plan ahead for it. Your task with this project is to develop a week-long nutrition unit.
TOPIC: Select a developmentally appropriate Nutrition topic and an age group (Toddlers, Preschool-age, or Early School-age) for which to plan a unit and write a minimum 3 learning objectives for your unit. See the text for samples of learning objectives, as well as any of the activity plans in Chapter 11 and the Classroom Corner activities at the end of each chapter. Remember that these objectives need to be written in clear and meaningful terms and be stated in terms of what a child will be able to show us that they know and that they are able to do. They must be measurable or observable. Include in this section the age group and a description of your topic along with the three objectives
UNIT PLANS include the following
5 learning activity plans – – Activities can be teacher directed (reading a book and discussion on topic, experiment, game, etc.) or a child led activity (creating a relevant play station such as a pizza shop for a dramatic play center) and be developmentally appropriate for a group of children of the age you designate, Plan for either toddlers, preschool age children, or early elementary age children.
5 children’s book annotations – each book should relate to the unit being taught, be developmentally appropriate for the age of children you are designing the unit for, and be annotated to include the book title, author, illustrator (if illustrated), publishing information, and a 25 – 50 and a 25 – 50 word annotation describing the book’s theme and classroom usefulness for this unit of study.
2 to 3 field trip or guest speaker suggestions – your field trip suggestions are to be located within a 25- mile radius of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Each field trip should be annotated to include the destination name, address, and contact information, along with a 100-150 word annotation describing the field trip destination and what you would expect your students to see and experience there, and how this relates to this unit of study. Alternatively, you can include a resource or guest speaker you would invite to the class. For example, a chef, dietician, parent who shares a favorite recipe, etc. Describe how you would prepare the speaker to come to your class. What would you want them to discuss? What materials or artifacts might they share with the children?
Family Newsletter- your task of educating families of the children in your care/classroom can include designing a family newsletter article or a family information sheet on your unit topic to be shared with parents
Snack/Meal Menu – you are to plan 1 breakfast, 1 lunch and 2 snacks daily for the 5 days of your unit. These snacks should be related to the unit theme, to the extent that it is possible. At least 3 of the snacks should involve the children in the preparation of the snack. Include how the children will help in the preparation and materials needed. All meals need to follow the CACFP guidelines.
Evaluation- In this section describe how you will evaluate whether the activities in the unit are successful. You will list at least two ways to evaluate the unit.
References: You must include a Citation page listing the websites and/or books you utilize in planning this unit. Use APA Citation.
COMMENTS: To earn an A on this project, you will need to produce an EXCELLENT integrated unit that fully meets ALL the requirements detailed above and on the rubric. Some guided classroom work time will be given but much of the work is expected to be done outside of class.
