For this option, you will write the “after” to Of Mice and Men. The goal is to incorporate elements of Steinbeck’s writing style, such as his use of dialect (slang), his descriptive imagery, his use of dialogue between characters, etc.
Consider the following prompts to help guide/inspire your sequel:
1. What do Slim and George talk about when they head back to the ranch for a drink?
2. What does George reveal (if anything) about what he has just done to Lennie and why he did it?
3. How does Crooks react when he hears about the death of Lennie? Does he realize the truth?
4. How does Candy react when he hears about the death of Lennie? Does he realize the truth?
5. Describe the atmosphere in the bunkhouse that night. What is everyone doing? How is George acting?
6. It’s the next day. Lennie is gone and George is on his own. Who is George’s closest friend now? How do they interact in this scene?
7. Do George and Candy continue to plan to buy the land and the house? If
so, how will they work out the details without Lennie’s stake? Will they let anyone else in on the dream?
8. The boss hears about what Lennie did to Curley’s wife and calls George into his office. Describe the conversation between George and the boss.
9. George goes out to the pond for some fresh air and a bunny rabbit hops past him. How does he react? Does he say/do anything?
10. Does George decide to stay and keep working on the ranch for now or go somewhere else? Where could he go?
11. Will George ever truly get over what he did to Lennie? If so, how long will it take him? How will he cope with the loss of his best friend?
