How often have you heard or been told to “be yourself” or “be true to yourself”? The issue with these questions is that in life, people, including future employers and health care professionals, assume we know our authentic self (or “who we really are”). Self-awareness and a healthy self-image are both concepts and an art. To become a culturally competent person, you have to know yourself. Please watch the 3 minute, 42 second video available at the following weblink: “The Reflection in Me.”
Then briefly write a reflection on the bullet points below:
Describe how you tend to feel and behave when meeting someone new (for example, you might say something like, I am shy, but I warm up after asking questions or being included in a conversation). Detail whether what you have written about your feelings and behaviors may be a good feature or a negative quality and/or if you would like to change your behavior(s)/feelings.
Explain why learning to love and accept yourself and having a positive self-image leads to healthier behaviors and may impact things like productivity in school or success at work.
