Term clarification
Style:
Style can refer to a movement or group of artists. Style can encompass the principles about form and appearance shared within a certain culture or era. Examples of style might be Surrealism, Impressionism, or Modernism (Reference: Chapter 4 page 106-107)
Materials:
Materials (sometimes referred to as an artist’s medium) refers to the materials used such as paint, metals, printmaking….
Content:
(Reference: Chapter 5 page 129- The Meaning of Art)
Beyond just the images that are portrayed in the work, content refers to the story it’s trying to tell- or the feelings it aims to solicit from the viewer.

1. Trace the history of American jazz from its roots to present. Include specific examples. Please consult and include reference from at least 3 sources besides your textbook. Give proper credit for facts and quotes.

2. Discuss examples of two musicians (or bands) whose original lyrics speak to social justice issues.
Discuss each musician separately including:
Who is their primary audience?
Who are their influences?
What is the tone of their music (angry, loving, hopeful, pessimistic …)?
Provide a brief example of their lyrics and explain what you believe to be their message.
Then discuss how they are similar and how they are different.
