Wikipedia defines Professional Ethics as:
Professional ethics encompass the personal, organizational and corporate standards of behavior expected of professionals. The term professionalism originally applied to vows of a religious order. By at least the year 1675, the term had seen secular application and was applied to the three learned professions: Divinity, Law, and Medical. The term professionalism was also used for the military profession around this same time.
With this in mind, please watch Dan Ariely’s Ted Talk: “Our Buggy Moral Code” and answer the questions:
1. What does professional ethics mean to you in your everyday world?
2. As with his example about nurses assuming they knew best, how does what we learn and assume in our professional lives interfere with our ethics?
3. Give an example of an issue of professional ethics in technology we face every day.
Be sure that you write one original response and at least 2 responses to your
peers for full credit.

Professional ethics to me means having the basic beliefs and standards that make everything run smoothly. Ethics are involved in all organizations and institutions around us whether it be political, medical, lawful, religious, or social. Ethics are what gives us comfort knowing that we live in a country where we can choose. Because we believe our doctors are ethical, we feel certain we can trust their diagnoses. If ethics did not apply to medicine, some doctors may knowingly misdiagnose their patients just for the sake of money rather than for the persons’ health and well-being. Ethics give us comfort that the business deal will not fall through. Today, laws and contracts are enforced to make sure that the business deals are fair and that both people will hold up their end of the deal.
What we learn in our professional lives reflects that Ethics is about character, who we are when no one is watching. If we will hurt someone else to get ahead; if we will cut corners to get the job done fast, not correctly; if we can’t be trusted when people leave us alone with money “they won’t miss”; if we’re the type of person who will keep money accidentally given to us by a teller or clerk, money that isn’t ours – then when the time comes to face a real and serious ethical dilemma, we will always make the wrong choice, the easy choice, the most expeditious choice, the lazy choice. Good character is critical to our success. It’s what we do and who we are when no one can see us, and it takes a lifetime of practice. We cannot call on the character in an instant. we can’t be “sometimes honest”. we’re either honest or we aren’t. Integrity is the consistency of character over time. Character and integrity are the most sought-after traits of all time. Without them, society would fail.
An issue of professional ethics in technology we face every day is the sharing of private information within an organization raises the question of whether the action is moral or immoral. Companies can collect information about individuals using computer programs and even use the information for their benefit without morality. Information systems enable people to manipulate records within a short period, thus raising questions on whether the information is genuine or vague.
LEAVE A COMMENT ON PEERS RESPONSE#2 (100 WORDS)
Professional ethics means that there is a certain behavior that is expected of people who work in a medical office, law office, military, and other occupations where an individual has a specific title. It means to set the standard on addressing situations and how one speaks in a certain manner. Ethics means to perform a responsibility or privacy, respect, and dignity. There cannot be emotions getting in the way of following these ethics.
The nurse assumed they new best on the patient’s case and ignored what the patient mentioned. This shows that the level of ethics was revoked because of nurses thinking their degree and qualifications were accurate on making decisions. Assuming in our lives puts our professional ethics at risk from not being obeyed due to emotions and preferences getting in the way.
An issue in professional ethics we face every day is when companies and organizations use people’s personal preferences and interests to advertise to them. The persons search history is being watched by companies to advertise to them on different platforms. This goes against privacy, and therefore goes against professional ethics of giving the right to others privacy.
