GUIDELINES THIRD SHORT PAPER 342 Please write between 350-500 words responding to ONE of the following prompts: 1) Select and compare two scenes from Tower (Keith Maitland, 2016). These scenes must be different from the ones discussed in the lecture. One must be an example of mimetic substitution AND another one must be an example of a non-mimetic OR evocative scene. Which scene is most powerful in your view and why? Describe closely each scene. In addition, illustrate each scene with a screengrab of the documentary in your paper. Important: one of the mandatory readings of the “Animated Documentary” lesson must be referenced in your paper if you choose this prompt.
2) Watch This is Spinal Tap (Rob Reiner, 1984) in its entirety (you will find it on iLearn under Week/Section 13). Select two characteristics of the mockumentary listed by Richard Wallace as discussed in class and explain how they work in This is Spinal Tap. Illustrate each of these characteristics with two different scenes (these must be distinct from the ones seen in the lecture). Important: Wallace’s mandatory reading must be referenced here if you choose this prompt. In your short paper please make sure to include: Title (please do not just write “first response paper” or the title of the film, but choose a title that reflects somehow the idea that you plan to develop) Thesis (example: “I would argue that in this film racial and class tension is achieved through…”): this is a claim that someone could argue against – it is not a factual observation.
Response: please make sure to actually respond to the prompt! At least one quote from a mandatory reading Follow MLA citation rules: https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/mla_style/mla_formatting_and_style_guide/mla_formatting_and_style_guide.html
